Descent into South Crete: The Magical Route to Kastri
How many times have you driven down a road and thought… “People need to see this”?
That thought came to life again on this breathtaking descent from the mountains of inland Crete to the shores of the Libyan Sea.
We start from Hondros, a traditional village in the Viannos region, and wind down through tight curves, skimming the edge of the dramatic Portela Gorge — one of the most striking and lesser-known canyons in southern Heraklion.
As the road lowers, the landscape opens up. The view fills with endless blue, and the coastal village of Keratokampos appears on the left, resting quietly by the sea.
Our destination is Kastri, a peaceful village nestled between the hills and the coast, overlooked by a striking rocky formation that resembles a natural fortress.
This is the authentic Crete — untouched, wild, and full of contrast.

The Mystery of Almyros Spring – Thousands of Liters Lost Every Day!
You are standing before one of Crete’s greatest water mysteries… the Almyros Spring.
A unique natural phenomenon, located 8 kilometers east of Heraklion, near Gazi.
A spring that flows endlessly, discharging enormous amounts of water… Yet, this natural treasure remains almost entirely unexploited.
Its water does not have a fixed origin. Mount Psiloritis, the highest mountain in Crete, acts as a natural aquifer. When rainfall and snowfall are abundant, water seeps into the rocks, travels underground, and resurfaces here, flowing through karstic channels.
But in times of drought, the story changes. The flow of freshwater decreases… and seawater takes its place.

In this video a small abandoned village of #Crete is presented with an incredible view and unique environment.
Its name is #Chavgas It is located in the area of #Plaka #Elounda to the way to #Vrouhas.
Even thow it has been abandoned for years because of its location with that great view of Spinalona and #Mirabello bay a lot of #villas has been built and some house has been restored.
Nicknamed as the island of the living dead, Spinalonga, lies at the natural harbor of Elounda in the prefecture of Lasithi in Crete.
Despite being a small barren island of 85 acres, it carries a long history and holds a special place in the Greeks' hearts, while it preserves its beauty notwithstanding of its dark past. Spinalonga remained under the Venetian rule even after the rest of Crete was occupied by the Ottomans. In 1715, however, the Ottomans managed to conquer the small island, banishing the Venetian presence from Crete completely. Eventually, in 1903, the Turkish left the island and it became once again a part of Greece.
Despite its rich heritage that stretches all the way back to antiquity, however, Spinalonga is known across the world as the host of the leper community from 1903 to 1957, and as one of the last active leper colonies in Europe, reaching a number of nearly 400 inhabitants during the outbreak of the illness.
The Monastery has been a continuous and inseparable part of the Cretan history during the last eight centuries.
The Monastery multi-faceted deed unfolds in the passage of time. Sources show that the Monastery had been a centre of education and manuscripts copying. They also produced needlework embroidered with gold during the 17th and 18th centuries dazzling the whole world.
The Monastery battles against the conquerors inspired the whole world. The sacrifice of the people living and dying there, affected and attracted the attention of the rest of the world. The Cretan occupation by the Turks occurs during the prosperity of the Monastery.
The monks participate in the 1821 Revolt and play a leading part in the events. The first havoc is on the way. It is then that the Monastery is ransacked and abandoned by the monks for a small period of time. However, they return soon. The highest offer of the Monastery is its self-sacrifice, heroism and pious altruism. It is the Holocaust of November 8th 1866.
The Monastery gave its fights against slavery. It managed to shake off the traces that the enemy fiercely desired to settle and succeeded in changing the course of the Cretan history. Ever since the Monastery bears the brunt of the history on its shoulders and continues taking part in the battles which followed the much afflicted island of Crete and strives in all possible ways to meet the expectations of its glory past.
